The closest you can get to going back in time to 1989, walking into a computer store and buying a brand new IBM square silver logo keyboard, in full retail packaging and even in the original cardboard IBM blue logo box that IBM sent the keyboards to the store.
You can’t get closer to the IBM factory than this. I acquired them from a computer retailer that ordered this directly from IBM but shut down about 25 years ago before they managed to sell it. Fortunately for us the owner held onto this small part of his old business for 25 years.
I have never seen photos in the forums of one of these, but did see only one unit that sold years ago by a major reseller dedicated to refurbishing IBM keyboards, out of the thousands of keyboards he’s refurbished over the years. Even Industrial SSKs are more common than a 1390131 in full retail packaging!
It is a pair of brand new factory sealed IBM Model M 1390131 square silver logo keyboards, in IBM retail packaging, and also in IBM’s original shipping box which had two of these keyboards per box. The box’s part number and quantity correspond to the inner packaging. Check out the photos for a full unboxing. The photos showing the keyboard are from another set – you will get one with the IBM factory tape seal still intact on both sides, meaning the keyboard has never been even looked at since the 1980s (I don’t know the date of manufacture but I would guess 1988 judging by the one I opened and photographed). I also have the exact pictured keyboard available if you’d like. It’s from October 1988.
I have one pair completely factory sealed, even the IBM shipping box is sealed though the seal is not too strong and the box has been re-taped recently. And I have the pictured one where the shipping box has been opened but the keyboards inside are completely factory sealed on all sides as pictured.
They are available individually or as a pair. One individual brand new 1390131 and one factory sealed set have already sold. I suggest getting the pair but would be fine with shipping just one of the two keyboards.
“New Keyboard Only” option details: You can save $79 by getting just the Brand New 1390131 keyboard and foam enclosure, no original retail box/manuals/cables (used and new IBM gray cables would be extra). You just get the keyboard itself (from 1988 or 1989) and the original foam packaging, no cables or anything else pictured. These have had the factory tape cut on one side of the foam for inspection.
