Customize your Brand New Model F Keyboard today and save $500!  The 62-key IBM Model F originally cost $941 just for the keyboard, adjusted for inflation!  That’s $340 in 1984 dollars (they also rented the keyboard to bank branches for $21/month).  This is per the IBM 1984 hardware price guide.

Choose Custom/Low Serial Number and jump ahead in line over 1,000 spots!  Also a great way to support the project a little more.  Serials can be up to 7 numerical digits only – no letters or other special characters.

Need help ordering? Please feel free to email me directly and I will help you! The email address is at the bottom of the page.

All F77 and F62 keyboards have function keys!  They are the function layer of the top row of keys.  You can have the keys printed with F1, etc. on them or leave the printing normal (for the F1 printing please order the extra set of 12 F1, etc. keys in the store item).

Please check out the home page to review all of the features and specifications of the Brand New Model F Keyboards.  All Brand New Model F Keyboards are fully functional with Mac, PC, Linux, and Android!

Important note:  please do check out the other items in the store, especially the First Aid Kit of spare parts for future repairs once production has long shut down (over 1000 kits ordered so far!), the brand new custom made solenoid and solenoid driver, controllers, key pullers, extra key sets (the key tops do wear down over time and you won’t be able to buy more XT quality one piece keys after the end of the project) and also a spare custom made 3 meter USB cable (same as the one that is installed with the keyboard). I hope to be able to manufacture as many First Aid Kits and spare parts as possible to keep all these great Model F keyboards running decades from now.

While ordering any of the recommended add-ons, please review the individual product pages to see the details of what you are getting.  For example, the solenoid is installed inside the classic style cases but must be mounted externally for the compact style cases.

There are additional key sets that can be ordered on the “Full Key Set” product page, including some key sets not offered on this page (Russian-Hebrew-English and Greek, for example).  Please check out that page for additional details.

Want to adjust the angle / height of your keyboard?  Check out the available bumpers of varying heights:  1/16″, 1/8″, 1/4″, 1/2″, 1″  see this store item for details.

Did you know that every 2U and larger key (backspace-sized key) and larger can be split into two keys, and the sensing pads are already there?  Just add a flipper and then you can add keys!  (Example splittable keys:  space bar, both shift keys, backspace, enter)  I recommend ordering the First Aid Kit to enable future repairs and modifications.  I offer a hardware layout modification service for a small extra charge (split or un-split keys only) – email me for details if interested.

For HHKB/split right shift and split backspace printed layouts, custom printed keys will be included:  1.5U size Delete key, 1U | \ key, 1.5U Caps Lock, 1.75U Left Ctrl, 1.75U right shift, and 1U Fn.  For the HHKB set with the non-split backspace, you will not receive the 1U | \ key and the | \-sized backspace key.  Please see below for details.  In terms of the physical layout possibilities, everything is the same on HHKB style split right shift and regular right shift layouts, except for the right shift key which moves some of the hardware around slightly.  HHKB style split right shift is 1.75U + 1U (does not allow regular right shift) and regular right shift can be split only as 1U+1.75U.  2021 update – the unlisted scumyc / scumnc boards have nearly all sold at this point so please contact me to check availability before ordering.  It offered a custom bottom row:  1.5U, 1.25, 1.25, 1.25, 5.75, 1, 1, 1, 1.

APL and JIS Key Set Notes:  APL and JIS key sets are available.  Please message me to check availability.

Note: legal, safety, and limited warranty information for this MODEL F LABS LLC product is available to consumers pre-sale and will be furnished upon request, by writing to the email or mailing address at the bottom of this web page.  Of course you’ll get a printed booklet with your order shipment!  If you are using your own keys, you’ll need stabilizer inserts (not included unless you buy a key set). You can order 4 stabilizer inserts by adding 4 units of the “Stabilizer insert” item to your cart.

“US ANSI” layouts are standard US keyboard offerings.  Below are the two available HHKB style layout offerings, in addition to the ANSI US and international layouts available (not pictured below).  The first layout below is the HHKB with Regular 2U Backspace and the second layout below is the HHKB with Split Backspace option.  The HHKB layout switches Ctrl and Caps lock, splits the right shift key to Shift and Fn, and only for the split backspace option does it put | \ and ~ ` keys in place of backspace and move the backspace key to replace the 1.5U | \ key below the backspace.  The Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and other buttons follow the HHKB Happy Hacking Keyboard standard.  For example, pressing Fn + I gives you Print Screen, Fn + O gives you Scroll Lock, and Fn + P gives you Pause/Break.  Fn + 1 gives you F 1, etc.  The key between right alt and right ctrl is factory set to Num Lock, though some prefer to change it to another option like Right Click / Menu.  Here are the other HHKB functions on the function layer, which can be accessed by holding down the Function key:  H is asterisk, J is forward slash, K is Home, L is page up, : ; is left arrow, ‘ ” is right arrow, { [ brackets is up arrow, N is +, M is minus, < , is End, > , is Page Down, and ? / is down arrow.

Classic Style Powdercoated (Painted) Case Color Options:

Here is the factory default function layer. Notes: these do not correspond to actual printed legends, only to software configurations. Your layout may not resemble the below layout but the function keys will all be the same. On all keyboards, the right Ctrl key will be labeled as Ctrl but will be factory configured for Fn if you did not order a split right shift keyboard which has the Fn key to the right of the shorter right shift key.  A note – disregard the num lock indication below as it is not set in any of the F62 keyboards.

For those ordering the split backspace, the function layer of the top right corner keys is shown here:

Example right side block configurations (1= Print Scr/Scr Lock/etc., 2=0-9 option, options 3-5 are premium options – see this page for more details on ordering).  The 6th option (not pictured) just shows the numbers and cursor keys with no other text.

For a text description of the two main right side block configurations:

The Print/Scr, Lock Layout matches the keys between the main block of the IBM keyboards and the right side number pad block and is as follows from left to right, top to bottom row:
Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause
Insert, Home, Page Up
Delete, End, Page Down
Blank key, Cursor Up, Blank Key
Left Arrow, Down Arrow, Right Arrow

The 0-9 and cursor keys option resembles a number pad while retaining the standard keyboard functionality (when the num pad is off you can click the 7 key for Home, for example).
7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3
0, Up Arrow, Period
Left Arrow, Down Arrow, Right Arrow

Below is an image of the US ANSI key set.  Everyone ordering a base key set gets full key set so you can use it on another IBM Model F or Model M keyboard.  It includes all the separate function keys, 2 unprinted keys (for between Ctrl and Alt), and (for F77 keyboards only) 2 unprinted pearl keys for the right side block (not pictured below).  When you configure with a HHKB layout and the key set, you get the base key set as well as the HHKB 6 key set: 1.5U size Delete key, 1U | key, 1.5U Caps Lock, 1.75U Left Ctrl, 1.75U right shift, and 1U Fn.  For the international key sets, please head over to the “Full Key Set” product page to see the included keys.  All key set images and included keys are not finalized and are subject to change.
