Hello! As you also sell vintage keyboard (including model M and model F keyboards).

I am wondering how much a difference a good condition foam makes. Does the foam affect key-feel or sound in any way? Would you recommend replacing an old foam from an IBM Model F “bigfoot” keyboard from ~1986? How do I know when it should be replaced?

Thanks for your response. I will consider replacing the foam when I have checked the condition of the original foam.

What causes the foam to wear out? I hear some people say that foam rots. Is that literally true? I guess the foam isn’t organic so it shouldn’t rot then. Or am I wrong?

Yes if the foam is of the crumbly variety, the keys can get wobbly and the foam bits can interfere with the capacitive sensing.  I have one available XT style original foam left and will not be making new foam for XT style Model F keyboards – please message or email me if interested.
